Hand Therapy

Hand therapy is an integral part of the rehabilitation process.  An essential part of therapy for both nonoperative and operative cases, it involves educating patients about their injury or condition and providing instruction in appropriate care of the afflicted area of the hand or arm while they are in the process of recovery.
Our hand group works most closely with Hand Therapy of San Francisco, an independent hand-therapy group whose owner, Pam Silverman, is a preeminent hand therapist recognized nationally and throughout Northern California.

Because of Pam's outstanding reputation, she has close contacts throughout the San Francisco Bay Area with whom she can coordinate follow-up care for our patients.  (For those patients who must travel far to reach us, Hand Therapy of San Francisco also arranges follow-up care in almost any distant location.)

Hand Therapy

Specifically, therapists who are specially trained in the care of the hands conscientiously design and implement treatment programs tailored to each patient, always with the ultimate goal being full restoration of function.  In many cases, these therapists will construct a variety of splints and braces to accommodate each phase of healing.
As the teamwork approach is considered of paramount importance for a good end result, these therapists work closely with Dr. Gordon to ensure that each patient receives the highest-quality care.
On days when patients do not attend a therapy session, they continue their therapy by doing exercises designed for them as part of a home program.  Ultimately, they transition to a program done completely at home.
Patients are generally sent to therapy on a regular basis, or otherwise in accordance with their needs.  A clinical reassessment is done about once a month to measure and affirm progress.
